Plastic Surgery

Making Plastic Surgery Better and Safe

Plastic Surgery is a rapidly evolving and diverse surgical specialty. Over the years, we have made many contributions to the field in the areas of composite tissue allotransplantation, liposuction, microsurgery, and flap dissection anatomy. Our current research team at the University of Louisville is exploring several new and popular topics and techniques in the field. We conduct clinically applicable research focused on developing safer treatments for plastic and reconstructive surgery patients. In addition, we are actively performing research in the following areas:

  • Composite tissue allotransplantation: face and hand transplantation.
  • Wound healing, tissue engineering.
  • Microsurgery/microcirculation: free fibula reconstruction of wrist and head and neck
  • Safe facelift: anatomic landmarks to avoid injury to midfacial nerve branches, marginal mandibular nerve, greater auricular nerve, cervical motor branch, and scalp alopecia.
  • Anatomic landmarks for safer hand surgery: basilar joint arthroplasty, first dorsal compartment release, carpal tunnel release, radial tunnel release, and trigger finger release.
  • The safe use of epinephrine in hand and finger surgery.
  • Anatomic consideration in nasal contour surgery: cephalic alar resection, upper lateral cartilage resection, caudal septal resection, and conchal cartilage harvest
  • Post-bariatric plastic surgery: anatomic landmarks for safe brachioplasty and abdominoplasty.
  • Breast reconstruction landmarks for safe DIEP flap elevation, nipple reconstruction options, tissue expander breast reconstruction, fat grafting techniques, breast reduction techniques.
  • Botox the proper depth of injection at various sites including forehead, between brows, and crow’s feet.
  • Brow lift technical considerations and position redefined.

Another example of our commitment to research and education in plastic surgery is our plan to host the 57th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Plastic Surgery Research Council Meeting. We are pleased to announce this new educational and research opportunity. The event will be hosted by Division Director Dr. Bradon J. Wilhelmi (PSRC President, 2010-2011) and the University of Louisville.

Future plans:
To advance the field of plastic surgery research to provide safe and better techniques in the field of plastic surgery.
