Leading the Way to Improve Our Understanding of Digestive Diseases
Dr. Susan Galandiuk is the Director of the Price Institute of Surgical Research and head of the Digestive Surgery Research Laboratory. Her team includes research fellows and medical students who are invited to take advantage of advanced degree options. Advanced degree programs include doctorates, master's degrees, as well as others. Every year the Section of Colon & Rectal Surgery selects six outstanding summer student researchers with an interest in medicine. The students pursue the challenges of scientific inquiry and discovery during a 6-8 week period. The six summer student researcher positions are open to medical students (first year), undergraduates, and high school students. The work is eventually presented as scientific posters in local/national research events and manuscripts submitted to scientific clinical/basic science journals. At the Digestive Surgery Research Laboratory, we are fortunate to have researchers from across the United States and abroad who share our enthusiasm and commitment to transform patients' lives through medical research.
Investigations include research on the interaction between the genetic, environmental, and clinical factors affecting susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Another main research interest is exploring the genetic mechanisms behind the development of colorectal cancer in IBD patients. This laboratory is using state-of-the art technology including "microarray" technology to identify genes that may lead to increased susceptibility to colorectal cancer. In addition to basic science research, the section of colon and rectal surgery is involved in many industry sponsored clinical trials to evaluate new drugs and devices in phase II and III trials. Investigator-initiated clinical trials and quality initiatives are also in progress.
Future Plans
To continue development of an independently funded, faculty driven research program, and to enhance research and continue educational programs.
