Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Application Procedures

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Louisville participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges. This service transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, and other supporting credentials from the applicants and their general surgery training programs via the Internet.

Entry qualifications include the completed residency application, satisfactory completion of a five-year ACGME-accredited program in General Surgery, four letters of recommendation from representative faculty in clinical or basic science disciplines or other individuals who can speak to the applicants unique qualifications to become a pediatric surgeon, and receipt of USMLE and ABSITE scores.

Application materials for each applicant are downloaded, and a folder is made for each applicant. The five pediatric surgical faculty members screen completed applications. Based on this review, 40-50 applicants are selected to interview. Group interviews are conducted on selected days, during which all but the most urgent clinical duties are prohibited. Each applicant meets individually for at least 30 minutes with all faculty members and the current fellow. At the conclusion of each interview, a written evaluation is created by each faculty member and placed in the applicant’s folder.

A ranking meeting is scheduled within one to two weeks after the applicant interview dates are completed. Each applicant’s folder is thoroughly reviewed and discussed by the faculty. At the first meeting, a provisional list is generated and a final meeting is held to rank the applicants. Applicants are ranked in the order agreed upon by the faculty. After the rank order list is generated, it is certified and submitted to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) via the Internet.

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Louisville is an equal opportunity employer. Decisions regarding interviewing and ranking of applicants are made without regard to age, sex, race, religion or ethnic background.
