Vascular surgery is one of the most dynamic and innovative surgical specialties in the field of medicine. The Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapeutics at the University of Louisville provides care for patients who have degenerative atherosclerotic and aneurysm disease, venous thrombotic disorders, venous insufficiency, trauma, hemodialysis access and nonatherosclerotic disorders. Patients are seen at the University of Louisville Hospital, Norton Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Louisville Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center and Kosair Children’s Hospital where the faculty provide attending and consultative services.

The academic faculty is comprised of three full-time members as well as an active voluntary clinical faculty of full-time, fellowship-trained vascular surgeons practicing in the Louisville region.
A Full Complement of Services
The vascular program was reorganized in January 2009 when Dr. Charles Ross moved from Vanderbilt University to take the reigns as division chief. He joined Drs. Amit Dwivedi and Andrea Yancey. A fourth full-time faculty member is presently being recruited. Clinical services provided by the faculty continue to expand and include open, endovascular, and hybrid reconstructions for aneurysmal and occlusive diseases of the aorta and its branches; operative treatment for extracranial cerebrovascular disease such as carotid endarterectomy; carotid artery stenting; endovascular, open, and hybrid extremity revascularization; pharmacologic and mechanical thrombectomy; endovenous ablative therapy and open and endovascular venous reconstructions; arterial and venous reconstructions following major oncologic resections in combination with surgical oncology; management of vascular trauma including thoracic aortic transections; hemodialysis access and various approaches for treatment of the vascular disorders of thoracic outlet syndrome. Management is comprehensive, with many cases treated medically and followed through state of the art surveillance.
Educating the Next Generation of Surgeons
The vascular education program provided by the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapeutics is multifaceted and vibrant. Senior surgical residents in combination with junior residents operate clinical services at the University of Louisville Hospital, Norton Hospital and Jewish Hospital under the supervision of the faculty. Medical students and surgical residents participate in Vascular Clinic, held weekly, at the University of Louisville Hospital. Vascular conference, incorporating case presentations and vascular quality improvement, is held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Opportunities to participate in clinical research and to publish are provided for interested surgical residents. The Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapeutics participates vigorously in the Grand Rounds program of the Department of Surgery. Leading vascular surgeons from institutions across the nation are invited as part of the division’s visiting professor program and provide provocative and challenging educational opportunities for all participants. A program for fellowship training in vascular surgery is presently being developed.
Research
Clinical research activities continue to expand. The division participates in four carotid artery stenting registries and trials as well as multiple other peripheral and dialysis access studies. Support of resident participation in vascular training and education programs is provided through the Alvin B. Ortner Endowed Scholarship in Vascular Surgery Fund and the Harbrecht Scholarship.
The Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapeutics is strongly committed to academic and clinical excellence.
