Leading the Way to Improve Our Understanding of Digestive Diseases
Dr. Susan Galandiuk is the Director of the Price Institute of Surgical Research
and head of the Digestive Surgery Research Laboratory. Her team includes
surgery residents, colon and rectal surgery fellows, research fellows, and
medical students. Investigations include research on the genetic components of
the innate immune system and how its function may be altered in IBD. Another
main research interest is colorectal cancer in IBD. This lab is using
"microarray" technology to identify genes that may lead to increased
susceptibility to colorectal cancer.

One of the major assets of the laboratory is a biorepository containing
leukocyte DNA from peripheral blood of more than 1500 patients, including over
400 patients with Crohn's disease, nearly 300 patients with ulcerative colitis,
100 patients with indeterminate colitis, 150 patients with sporadic colorectal
cancer, 200 first-degree relatives of IBD patients, and more than 400 controls.
Research fellows are invited to take advantage of advanced degree options to
suit their career interests and needs. Advanced degree programs include
doctorates, master's degrees, as well as others. Those who are interested in
obtaining a PhD during their research fellowship must complete a minimum of 2.5
years. Over the past five years, three of our research fellows have obtained a
PhD degree during their time in the laboratory. For a list of recent research
and clinical publications, see:

In addition to basic research, the section of colon and rectal surgery is
involved in many industry sponsored clinical trials to evaluate new drugs and
devices in phase II and III trials. Investigator-initiated clinical trials and
quality initiatives are also in progress.
