Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery

Home to Kentucky's First Heart Transplantation is Now Transforming its Research Mission to Develop One of the Top Cardiovascular Research Institutes in the World for Bio-Adaptive Heart Innovations

Behind this program is a remarkable development in basic laboratory research. The clinical excellence on the adult by Drs. Gray, Ganzel, Slater, Pagni, Dowling, and Aggarwal and on the pediatric side by Drs. Austin and Mascio has now been complemented by the effective laboratory work of Drs. Chien, Pantalos, Koenig, and Litwak at the bench.

The two components of the program are working cohesively and will be housed in the new Cardiovascular Innovation Institute adjoining the endeavors of the School of Medicine, the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Jewish Hospital Healthcare Inc. The federally competitive funding at every level in this unit has been outstanding and has set new standards, not only for the Division but the Department as a whole.
