Samuel Gross, M.D., the foremost
surgeon of his day, served as
chairman of the Department of
Surgery at the University of
Louisville from 1841-1856. He is
best known for establishing the
famous Gross Clinic, whereas few may
know that he also established an
active and innovative surgical
research laboratory-a rarity at that
time. Our current research efforts
are reflected in this rich history
and by our forward-thinking
investigators with pioneering
research activities. We are proud to
be nationally recognized for
cutting-edge advances through
research in cancer treatment and
early detection; organ
transplantation; cardiovascular
biomechanics and transplantation;
hand biomechanics and
transplantation; alternatives to
immunosuppressive therapy; tissue
ischemia; pediatric surgery
research; plastic and reconstructive
surgery; prevention of surgical
infections; as well as treatment of
digestive diseases, pneumonia, and
shock.

Several of our faculty investigators
have received awards from the
National Institutes of Health (NIH).
You will find a description of our
NIH-funded research projects on our
website at the link NIH Funding. As
our leader, the Sam and Lolita
Weakley Professor and Chair of the
Department of Surgery,
Kelly M. McMasters, M.D.,
Ph.D., is principal investigator
of his own NIH R01 research grant
award mechanism for his work with
E2F-1 cancer gene therapy. Dr.
McMasters is also author and
principal investigator of one of the
largest studies on melanoma (AboutMelanoma.com)
and initiated the University of
Louisville Breast Cancer Sentinel
Lymph Node Study (AboutBreastHealth.com).
Within the Division of General
Surgery,
Drs. William G. Cheadle
and
R. Neal Garrison both
have had continuous VA Merit Review
funding for over 15 years. Other
